Atherton's Insights on the Upcoming Semifinal

London [UK], March 4: As India prepares to face England in the ICC T20 World Cup semifinal at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, former England cricketer Michael Atherton shared his thoughts on the matchup. He acknowledged India's strength as a formidable team but pointed out that they are not invincible, citing a lack of a backup bowling option and some batters not performing at their peak.

This semifinal marks the third consecutive T20 World Cup clash between India and England, following their encounters in 2022 and 2024. During a discussion on the Sky Cricket Podcast, Atherton highlighted India's vulnerabilities but emphasized that England must perform at their highest level to secure a victory. He anticipates a final showdown between India and South Africa, reminiscent of the 2024 edition.

Atherton noted that England should draw confidence from reaching the semifinals despite the struggles of openers Jos Buttler and Phil Salt, who have collectively scored fewer than 200 runs and managed only one half-century. Buttler, in particular, has struggled, amassing just 62 runs across seven innings.

He remarked, "Before the tournament, many believed that for England to succeed, the Salt-Buttler partnership would be crucial, yet neither has found their rhythm." He added that the team can take heart from their ability to win without their key players firing on all cylinders and that they are improving.

Atherton expressed concerns about whether England can elevate their performance in critical moments, similar to their title-winning squad from 2022. He praised India's exceptional performance, particularly their run chase against the West Indies under pressure to qualify for the semifinals.

However, he reiterated that India is not unbeatable, pointing out issues in their fielding and bowling, especially if one or two of their primary bowlers are targeted. He concluded by stating, "Some of their batters are also not at their best, making them vulnerable. England must be at their peak to overcome them, and I predict an India vs South Africa final, a repeat of 2024."
