A Call for Caution from the Mexican President

On July 3, in Mexico City, President Claudia Sheinbaum urged fans to celebrate with caution if the national team triumphs over England in their upcoming FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match on July 5. She emphasized the importance of avoiding excessive alcohol consumption and steering clear of crowded public spaces during the festivities.

This plea follows a tragic incident after Mexico's 2-0 win against Ecuador, where celebrations turned fatal. Reports indicate that at least four individuals lost their lives near the famous Paseo de la Reforma, where around one million fans had gathered to celebrate the victory.

Sheinbaum highlighted the dangers of alcohol abuse, stating, "Excessive drinking during such celebrations can lead to problems, including increased violence related to alcohol," during her regular morning press briefing.

She also reminded fans and authorities alike of their shared responsibility to ensure that celebrations are safe and orderly.

Authorities reported that three of the deceased, including a 44-year-old man and two women aged 19 and 48, died from suffocation after being crushed in the large crowd during the celebrations.

Mexico's journey in the tournament began with a 2-0 victory over South Africa, followed by a 1-0 win against South Korea, and a 3-0 triumph over Czechia in the group stage. Their 2-0 win against Ecuador marked Mexico's first knockout-stage victory in the FIFA World Cup since 1986, ending an eight-match elimination streak, the longest in the tournament's history.

As for England's performance in the 2026 World Cup, they secured a 4-2 victory against Croatia, drew 0-0 with Ghana, and won 2-0 against Panama in the group stage. In their Round of 32 match, England came from behind to defeat Congo DR 2-1, with captain Harry Kane scoring both goals to advance to the Round of 16 against Mexico.
