Mehidy Hasan Miraz Aims for Bangladesh's Direct Qualification in ICC ODI World Cup
Bangladesh's World Cup Aspirations
Dhaka [Bangladesh], December 16: One of the primary goals for Bangladesh and their ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz is to secure direct qualification for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup. The captain is determined to leverage the next 12 months to ensure his team's automatic entry into the 14th edition of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, according to the ICC's official site.
The 2027 World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, with Bangladesh currently sitting just outside the automatic qualification spots in the ICC ODI Team Rankings.
As co-hosts, South Africa and Zimbabwe automatically qualify for the tournament, while the top eight teams in the ICC ODI Rankings will join them for the next edition.
Currently ranked 10th in the ODI standings, Mehidy Hasan Miraz is focused on achieving strong results in 2026 to secure automatic qualification.
“Reflecting on 2025, we didn’t have many ODI matches; it was quite sporadic. However, 2026 presents numerous matches and consecutive series. Our current ranking is vital, as remaining in the top eight is essential ahead of the World Cup. Thus, 2026 is a crucial year for me. With more ODIs, alongside Tests and T20Is, players can better prepare their mindset, particularly for one-day cricket,” Mehidy stated as reported by the ICC.
To aid Bangladesh in achieving automatic qualification for the next World Cup, Mehidy Hasan Miraz must spearhead their revival in the 50-over format. The 28-year-old, who has been a significant player in Bangladesh's ODI framework for nearly a decade, took over as ODI captain in mid-2025 after Najmul Hossain Shanto's exit.
Throughout his 114-match ODI career, Mehidy has batted in various positions, but he is keen to solidify his role in the middle order before the World Cup.
“I often mention that I’ve played in every batting position for Bangladesh, from opening to No.9. I understand each role and how to perform in those positions. My most impactful innings have often come when batting at No.8, partnering with the bowlers. I’ve secured many victories that way, against teams like India and Afghanistan,” Mehidy remarked.
“I’ve come to realize that scoring 40, 50, or 60 runs to help the team win is crucial. Batting at No.6 allows me to play alongside specialist batters and bowlers, maximizing our chances of winning,” he added.
“While I’ve had success batting at No.4, we didn’t win those matches. Ultimately, as captain, securing victories is paramount. Even if I score 60 or 70 runs at No.6, it will significantly benefit the team. I’m committed to mastering this role further,” he concluded.
