Meenakshi Goyat's Remarkable Victory
Jind (Haryana) [India] - Asian Championships silver medalist Meenakshi Goyat expressed her joy after defeating World Championships bronze medalist Vinesh Phogat during the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) women's trials, which are crucial for selection in the Asian Games squad. Meenakshi is now focused on her ambition to become a world champion this year.
The 53 kg category was the highlight of the trials, where Meenakshi's victory over Vinesh, with a score of 6-4 in the semifinals, was the day's biggest surprise. However, she later lost to Antim Panghal in the finals with a close score of 3-2. Although Meenakshi has not yet qualified for the Asian Games scheduled for September in Japan, her win against Vinesh is a significant achievement.
In an interview, Meenakshi remarked, “It’s a fantastic victory. I aimed to compete until the end without focusing on the outcome, whether I won or lost. My goal was to fight.”
She acknowledged making some mistakes during the match and admitted to being somewhat careless. On her belief in defeating Vinesh, she stated, “I had to believe in myself. I was thrilled to compete against her and to win.”
Meenakshi dedicated her victory to her family and coaches, who have supported her throughout her journey.
Looking ahead, she is setting her sights on the World Championships, which will take place from October 24 to November 1 in Kazakhstan. “I want to concentrate on becoming a world champion this year,” she expressed.
To aspiring wrestlers, she advised, “Work hard, and you will surely succeed one day.”
Her father, Prem, shared his aspirations for her, stating he hopes she will achieve great success and represent the country at the Olympics. “I want her to make a name for herself and aim for the Olympics,” he added.
After her victory over Vinesh, Prem spoke with her, and she conveyed her happiness about the win. “She mentioned that she would perform well in the Olympics and strive for gold,” he noted.
Prem also highlighted the joy that filled their village and home following her win. “Beating Vinesh is a significant achievement in itself,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the challenges Meenakshi has faced, he mentioned her struggles with injuries throughout her career. “At one point, doctors told us she might not be able to wrestle again. Her journey here is a testament to her hard work,” he said.
Looking to the future, Prem expressed his hope that his daughter will win gold at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
