Harare [Zimbabwe], September 16: Australian cricketer Matt Renshaw has expressed his enthusiasm about returning to One Day International (ODI) cricket, calling it a "fantastic opportunity." He is eager to don the Australian jersey once again, especially with the ODI World Cup on the horizon.
Having made an unexpected appearance in a prior T20 World Cup, Renshaw is optimistic about securing another chance to compete on the global stage.
"Playing ODI cricket is a remarkable opportunity for me. If I get the chance to participate in the World Cup, it would be incredible. I had a similar experience during the T20 World Cup when I was not anticipating it," Renshaw shared, as reported by Cricket.au.com.
His return to the format was nothing short of spectacular, as he scored his first ODI century, while Nathan Ellis took five wickets, leading Australia to a 59-run victory over Zimbabwe in the first match of their three-match ODI series at the Harare Sports Club on Tuesday.
After being invited to bat first, Australia set a formidable target of 294/8 in their 50 overs, with Renshaw contributing a pivotal 109 runs. The left-handed batsman played a crucial role in stabilizing the innings before accelerating towards the end.
This century marked the first ODI hundred for Australia against Zimbabwe since Michael Clarke's unbeaten 105 in Harare back in 2004. Additionally, it was the first ODI century by an Australian batting at No. 6 or lower since Glenn Maxwell's remarkable 201-run innings against Afghanistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Renshaw also mentioned his passion for bowling and his desire to support the team in that capacity. He reflected on Australia's recent series in Bangladesh, where, despite a challenging batting performance with only two runs across three innings, he managed to make a significant impact with his bowling.
"Bowling has always been something I enjoy. I hope my contributions are beneficial to the team. In Bangladesh, even though I had a tough time with the bat, I was able to contribute with my bowling," Renshaw commented on his dual role.
