Mason Crane's Unexpected International Recall

London [UK], October 16: England's leg-spinner Mason Crane expressed his surprise at being named in the squad for the upcoming ODI tri-series in Pakistan, marking his return to the national team after nearly a decade. This news was reported on the ICC website.

At 29 years old, Crane previously played three international matches as a young player in 2017 and early 2018. He admitted that he had started to lose hope of being called up again until he reignited his passion for the game in recent years.

In a conversation with the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast, Crane shared, "Honestly, I didn’t see this coming. It was quite unexpected. But I’m thrilled and excited. A few years back, I had accepted that I might not get another chance, which led me to put too much pressure on myself and not enjoy the game as much."

He continued, "However, over the last couple of years, I feel like I’ve regained that spark and ambition that drives me."

Crane's last appearance for England was during the final Test of the 2017-18 Ashes series in Sydney, where he took the wicket of Usman Khawaja, who had scored 171 runs, as Australia clinched the series 4-0.

He also played in two T20 Internationals against South Africa, where he managed to dismiss the legendary AB de Villiers.

In the domestic circuit this year, Crane has been impressive, claiming 34 wickets in 14 County Championship matches and an additional 15 in 10 Vitality Blast games, which bolstered his case for an international comeback.

Crane mentioned that he has focused on enhancing his consistency and variations as a leg-spinner, emphasizing the importance of adapting to match situations and strategizing to dismiss specific batters rather than relying solely on occasional exceptional deliveries.

"I don’t want to be known just for a few highlight-reel deliveries. I take pride in playing according to the situation, figuring out how to maximize my effectiveness on the pitch and how to get particular batsmen out. I’ve also allowed myself more freedom with my bowling now. I aim to bowl more variations, and I’m getting better at executing them. It’s crucial to have a diverse skill set," he explained.

England's tri-series campaign will kick off against Pakistan in Rawalpindi on October 20, serving as a preparation phase for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
