Meeting to Enhance Youth Engagement in Sports

In Dehradun, Uttarakhand, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, R.K. Sudhanshu, recently met with the celebrated Olympic medalist and boxing icon Mary Kom. This meeting took place on Thursday and aimed to explore ways to foster youth involvement in sports.

The discussions centered around potential collaborations with corporate partners and NGOs to nurture young talent. The focus was also on aligning with the Chief Minister's vision to enhance sports infrastructure, provide training, and create opportunities that would inspire the youth to engage in sports, thereby strengthening the sporting culture in Uttarakhand.

Mary Kom, an Olympic medallist and a six-time world champion, is a legendary figure in boxing. Her remarkable achievements include being a six-time world champion (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2018) and securing a bronze medal in 2019, making her a standout in women's boxing.

Her rise to fame began in 2002 when she became the first Indian boxer to win a gold medal at the World Championships, marking the start of a distinguished career in Indian sports.

A pivotal moment in her career occurred during the London 2012 Olympics, where she represented India as the only female boxer and won a bronze medal in the women's flyweight category. This achievement was particularly noteworthy as it was only India's second Olympic boxing medal, following Vijender Singh's bronze in Beijing 2008.

Mary Kom is also recognized as the third Indian woman to earn an Olympic medal, joining the ranks of weightlifter Karnam Malleswari, who won bronze in Sydney 2000, and badminton player Saina Nehwal, who achieved bronze at the same London Games.
