Mary Kom and Bhaichung Bhutia Advocate for Grassroots Sports Development at Khelo India Tribal Games 2026
Promoting Grassroots Sports in India
Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], April 3: Renowned six-time World Championship medallist Mary Kom and former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia emphasized the significance of investing in grassroots sports and establishing structured development pathways during a press conference at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 on Friday.
To nurture future champions, both athletes urged Indian families to limit children's screen time and encourage them to engage in various sports activities outdoors, as highlighted in a press release from the KITG 2026.
Bhaichung Bhutia, a legendary figure in Indian football, pointed out that while events like the Khelo India Tribal Games (KIBG) are promising beginnings, the long-term success of sports in India relies on strengthening its foundational aspects. He reflected on his own experiences, noting the pivotal role of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in developing young athletes during a time when sports infrastructure was still maturing.
“I am a product of SAI, being part of its first batch in 1986. It is crucial to invest at the grassroots level, yet we often neglect this and focus solely on elite athletes,” Bhutia remarked, stressing the importance of sustained attention at the base of the sporting hierarchy.
He highlighted the abundant talent present in tribal areas, which needs the right environment to thrive. “Tribal communities possess significant sporting talent, especially from the Northeast, where numerous athletes have excelled on the global stage. Providing young individuals with opportunities is essential. I believe we will witness an influx of talent from tribal backgrounds in the coming years,” he stated.
Bhutia also shared insights on how access and environment shape athletes, recalling his upbringing. “In the Northeast, you typically engage in either football or music. That was my reality. Football was the dominant sport in Sikkim, played in every village and town,” he explained.
Mary Kom echoed Bhutia's sentiments, commending the Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) as a groundbreaking initiative that addresses longstanding gaps in access and awareness.
“I want to congratulate the Chhattisgarh Government for launching the Khelo India Tribal Games here. I am thrilled to support this initiative wholeheartedly, as our tribal communities have immense potential. In the past, they lacked platforms and awareness, which hindered many talented children from progressing,” said the 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist boxer.
The celebrated boxer from Manipur also noted the transformative impact of government-supported programs. “Thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Khelo India and Fit India initiatives, children are increasingly taking the initiative to participate and represent the country. This is a remarkable development for India's sporting future,” she remarked.
Mary Kom reiterated that while opportunities have expanded, discipline and perseverance are crucial for success, encouraging young athletes to make the most of the support available to them.
