Marta Kostyuk Shocks Iga Swiatek to Reach French Open Quarterfinals
Kostyuk's Historic Victory
On Sunday, Marta Kostyuk made headlines by advancing to the quarterfinals of the French Open for the first time, defeating four-time champion Iga Swiatek with a score of 7-5, 6-1, spoiling Swiatek's birthday celebrations.
Kostyuk, who remains unbeaten on clay this season, had previously lost all three encounters against Swiatek without winning a single set.
Displaying exceptional defensive skills, Kostyuk chased down Swiatek's powerful shots and delivered impressive groundstroke winners, while Swiatek struggled with her own errors.
The match began with an intense exchange, and Swiatek secured an early break after a lengthy rally with a backhand winner. However, Kostyuk quickly responded by breaking back, only to lose her serve again, giving Swiatek a 5-4 advantage.
As the pressure mounted, Swiatek showed signs of anxiety, committing a double fault, hitting a forehand wide, and missing a volley, which allowed Kostyuk to equalize at 5-5. Swiatek's further double faults in the 12th game enabled Kostyuk to clinch the set with a backhand passing shot.
After a brief break for Swiatek, Kostyuk kept her energy up by stretching and even dancing to the music, earning applause from the crowd.
Following a week of oppressive heat, Paris experienced a welcome drop in temperature to 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit) around midday.
Upon resuming play, Swiatek initially broke Kostyuk's serve, but another double fault and additional unforced errors allowed Kostyuk to level the score at 1-1. From that point, Kostyuk dominated, winning the last five games.
Previously, Kostyuk had reached the fourth round at Roland Garros in 2021, where she lost to Swiatek.
Currently ranked 15th, Kostyuk is on a remarkable run, extending her clay winning streak to 16 matches. Before the French Open, she secured her biggest career title in Madrid, following another victory in Rouen, France.
In contrast, Swiatek has not claimed a clay title since her triumph at the 2024 French Open.
