Marizanne Kapp's Stellar Performance Leads South Africa to Victory Over India in Women's T20 World Cup
Kapp's Unbeaten Knock Secures Win
Marizanne Kapp capitalized on two missed catches to score an impressive unbeaten 81, guiding South Africa to a vital six-wicket victory against India in their Group A match of the Women's T20 World Cup on Sunday.
Earlier in the match, Kapp also contributed with the ball, taking 2 wickets for 27 runs. Her explosive innings included seven boundaries and four sixes, all achieved in just 45 deliveries. The dropped catches by substitute fielder Radha Yadav proved to be a significant setback for the Indian team.
Chasing India's total of 158 for seven, South Africa successfully reached 161 for four, finishing the game with five balls remaining.
Kapp formed a crucial partnership of 97 runs for the third wicket with Tazmin Brits, who scored 40 runs off 36 balls, setting the stage for a remarkable win that elevated the Proteas to third place in the points table, just behind India and Australia.
Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur opened the innings alongside Shafali Verma, frequently rotating the bowlers. However, the South African openers displayed resilience, opting for a cautious approach rather than aggressive batting.
By the end of the fifth over, South Africa had reached 25 without losing a wicket, but a double-wicket maiden from Shree Charani, who finished with figures of 3 for 24, disrupted their momentum during the powerplay.
Charani executed a brilliant catch to dismiss the dangerous Laura Wolvaardt for 20 and then bowled Annerie Dercksen for a duck just two balls later.
Despite this setback, South Africa regained control of the match thanks to the strong partnership between Kapp and Brits, who scored their runs in just 63 balls.
The duo excelled in running between the wickets and consistently found boundaries, keeping their team in contention. However, their progress was aided by a dropped catch from Radha Yadav, which allowed Kapp to continue her innings.
The partnership concluded when Brits was caught at deep backward square off Shafali's bowling in the 17th over. Kapp would have been dismissed shortly after had Radha not dropped another straightforward catch.
Earlier in the innings, Deepti Sharma contributed a crucial 29 runs, while captain Harmanpreet Kaur added 24 as India struggled to adapt to a challenging pitch, barely surpassing the 150-run mark.
India's innings faltered from a strong start of 54 without loss to 83 for four, before the experienced duo stabilized the innings with a 33-run partnership for the fifth wicket, despite some poor shot selections.
Deepti hit three fours in her 21-ball innings before falling to a sweep shot, while Harmanpreet, who became the first player in history to play 200 T20Is across both genders, also fell at a critical moment, scoring 24 runs off 22 balls.
