Manuel Neuer Sets New Record for Most World Cup Appearances by a Goalkeeper
Neuer Breaks World Cup Appearance Record
In a remarkable achievement, Germany's Manuel Neuer has made history by becoming the goalkeeper with the highest number of appearances in FIFA World Cup history. He reached this milestone during his 21st match against the Ivory Coast in Group E on Saturday, surpassing France's Hugo Lloris, who previously held the record with 20 appearances.
During the same match, Franck Kessie of the Ivory Coast made his mark by scoring the opening goal in the 30th minute. At 29 years and 183 days, Kessie became the second-oldest player to score for the Ivory Coast in World Cup history, following Didier Drogba, who scored at the age of 32 in 2010.
Ahead of the match, Neuer announced that he plans to retire after the FIFA World Cup 2026, a decision he shared during a press conference on Thursday. The 40-year-old goalkeeper, who was part of Germany's victorious 2014 World Cup team, is currently participating in his fifth consecutive World Cup as the starting goalkeeper.
Neuer had initially stepped back from international football after Germany's quarter-final exit at Euro 2024, but his impressive performance in the latter half of the season with Bayern Munich led coach Julian Nagelsmann to include him in the World Cup squad.
Reflecting on his decision to retire, Neuer stated, "I stepped back in 2024 with a good reason after a good home Euro. For me, it was the right decision. It felt right." He made his return in Germany's opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 against Curacao, where Germany secured a commanding 7-1 victory.
Neuer emphasized that this tournament will be his last, stating, "For me, it is clear that this is my last tournament. I do not plan to be there in two years for the next Euro." He expressed his desire to focus on the upcoming games rather than dwell on farewells.
