Manpreet Singh Sets New Record as India's Most-Capped Hockey Player
A Historic Milestone in Indian Hockey
New Delhi, June 18: As Indian hockey commemorates a century of its illustrious history, Manpreet Singh, a pivotal figure in contemporary hockey, has achieved a remarkable milestone that no other Indian player has reached.
The midfield dynamo has made history by becoming the most-capped player in Indian hockey, marking his 413th international match, as confirmed by an official announcement.
Manpreet has surpassed the previous record held by Dilip Tirkey, the current President of Hockey India, who had 412 international appearances in his illustrious career.
This historic achievement occurred during India's FIH Hockey Pro League 2025/26 match against Germany in Rotterdam.
In honor of this significant accomplishment, Hockey India has congratulated Manpreet and awarded him a cash prize of ₹10 lakh.
For over 15 years, Manpreet has been the driving force behind Indian hockey, showcasing relentless energy in midfield, leading under pressure, and exemplifying consistency at the highest levels of the sport.
Since debuting as a bold 19-year-old in 2011, he has been instrumental in India's resurgence on the global stage, contributing to one of the most successful periods in the nation's hockey history.
With a record that once seemed unattainable, Manpreet has solidified his legacy as one of the greatest players to don the Indian jersey.
This achievement places him among the elite in world hockey, as he now ranks fifth on the all-time list for men's international caps, trailing only Belgium's John-John Dohmen (481), Netherlands' Teun de Nooijer (453), Australia's Eddie Ockenden (451), and Great Britain's Barry Middleton (432). In addition to surpassing Tirkey, Manpreet is ahead of other legends in the 400-caps club, including Pakistan's Waseem Ahmed (410) and Netherlands' Jeroen Delmee (401).
Remarkably, at 33 years old, he is the only active player globally with over 400 caps, highlighting his longevity and exceptional consistency over 15 years at the top level.
From facing challenges during his Olympic debut in London 2012 to leading India to a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Manpreet's journey reflects the revival of Indian hockey on the world stage.
Throughout his career, he has played crucial roles in India's gold medal victories at the 2014 and 2022 Asian Games, Asia Cup wins in 2017 and 2025, multiple Asian Champions Trophy titles, and consecutive Olympic bronze medals at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.
Recognized as one of the finest midfielders of his generation, Manpreet, who hails from Mithapur, Jalandhar, received the Arjuna Award in 2018 and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna in 2021 for his outstanding contributions to Indian hockey.
More than just a record, Manpreet's 413th match symbolizes an era. It tells the story of a player who evolved from a promising teenager into a defining figure in modern Indian hockey, carrying the aspirations of a nation across various competitions and generations. With each match, Manpreet has contributed to the narrative of Indian hockey's resurgence; this milestone secures his place in its history for years to come.
Expressing his joy upon reaching this milestone, Manpreet stated, “It is a very proud moment for me to have played so many matches for India. Representing the country has always been the biggest honor of my life, and reaching this milestone makes me extremely happy.”
He continued, “I dedicate this achievement to my teammates and thank Hockey India for its unwavering support throughout my career. Every player I have shared the field with has played a part in this journey. Through all the ups and downs, my teammates have been there for me. I also want to dedicate this milestone to my family, especially my mother, brothers, wife, and children, who have supported me unconditionally from the very beginning.”
Discussing his motivation, Manpreet, who will celebrate his 34th birthday later this month, said, “What drives me is my dream to play for India and win medals for the country. I am incredibly proud to have won medals in back-to-back Olympics with the team. The World Cup and the dream of winning Olympic gold continue to inspire me every day. My children also motivate me greatly. The support of my family and teammates energizes me to give my best on the field and make them proud.”
