Manjot Kalra's Bail Denied Amid Match-Fixing Allegations in Sri Lanka

Legal Troubles for U19 World Cup Star

Manjot Kalra, the cricketer who played a pivotal role in India's U19 World Cup victory, continues to face legal challenges in Sri Lanka. A court has turned down his bail application following his arrest on suspicions of match-fixing. Kalra, who co-owns the Jaffna Kings team, was taken into custody earlier this month alongside Yuvraj Pushpa. They sought bail from Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama after being detained from July 17 to July 31.

Court Denies Bail Request

The lawyer representing both Kalra and Pushpa, K.W.S. Fernando, argued for their release on health grounds. However, the prosecution, citing ongoing investigations by the Sri Lanka Police Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Offences Related to Sports, opposed the bail request. Consequently, the court upheld the remand order.

Notably, Sri Lankan players Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Avishka Fernando, and Dunith Wellalage have brought forth the corruption allegations, with two additional domestic players joining the complaint.

From July 17 to August 8, the Lanka Premier League will feature 24 matches across five teams. Recently, the Innovative Production Group, which holds the rights to Sri Lanka Cricket and the Lanka Premier League, terminated its contract with Sports Commune.

Impact on Team Finances

Kalra's detention has severely affected the financial stability of the Jaffna Kings. As a result, IPG and SLC have taken over the management of all cricket-related contracts, including coaching and support staff, to restore order within the team. This intervention was necessary after Sports Commune failed to provide sponsorship funds, leading players to cover sponsor logos with black tape during a match on July 22.

Since the intervention, approximately 90% of the outstanding salaries for players and staff have been paid using emergency funds, with IPG committing to settle the remaining amounts by the contractual deadlines.
