Mangesh Yadav's Inspiring Journey from Struggles to IPL Stardom
From Humble Beginnings to IPL Success
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], March 25: Mangesh Yadav's journey to professional cricket is a testament to perseverance and sacrifice. Before he ever bowled a ball in the big leagues, his father, Ramavadh Yadav, toiled through sleepless nights, worrying about how to fund his son's aspirations.
Investing every resource he had, Ramavadh supported Mangesh, who began his cricketing journey playing in a small courtyard alongside his mother. Today, Mangesh has secured a lucrative contract worth Rs 5.2 crore with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, as reported.
Reflecting on their past financial struggles, Ramavadh shared, “I faced immense challenges to make ends meet. There were nights I couldn't sleep, consumed by thoughts of how to support his dreams. Life as a truck driver is tough; you hardly have time for yourself.”
Hailing from Borgaon in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district, Mangesh grew up in modest conditions. His uncle first recognized his talent during local tennis ball tournaments and encouraged him to pursue training in Delhi under coach Phool Chand Sharma.
Mangesh expressed gratitude, stating, “If I am playing cricket today, it is because of Phool Chand sir.” He recalled the struggle of moving to Delhi with just Rs 24,000, a sum his father had painstakingly gathered. “I couldn't believe how quickly that money disappeared in the first month,” he added.
His father often sought help from friends and family to cover Mangesh's training expenses. Coach Phool Chand noted, “Mangesh was living with someone in Delhi, and I noticed he was a talented bowler but lacked basic necessities. I invited him to stay at the hostel, where his real journey began. I believe in talent over wealth; if a player is good, they deserve support.”
At one point, Mangesh lost his focus. “I became complacent. One day, sir told me to pack my bags and go home. After some time, I realized my mistakes and apologized, promising to refocus. I thought about my family and how hard my dad worked for me.”
Determined to seize the opportunity, Mangesh immersed himself in training, participating in the DDCA league and local tournaments, eventually making it to the UP U-19 camp, though the next step remained elusive.
His father recalled moments of despair when Mangesh would travel to selection camps only to be told his name was mistakenly called. “Those were the times I felt helpless, questioning whether I had made the right decision in supporting his dream,” he said.
The breakthrough came during the Madhya Pradesh T20 League, where Mangesh took 14 wickets in six matches, boasting an impressive average of 12.00. After representing Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket alongside RCB captain Rajat Patidar, he finally received the call he had long awaited from Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
During the trials, his adaptability was tested. “Dinesh Karthik sir approached me, saying, ‘You’re bowling well. Now show me this ball.’ He had me bowl in various match situations, which was enlightening to see how a player of his caliber thinks,” Mangesh recounted.
Post-auction, Mangesh felt immense gratitude towards his coach. “When I returned to the club, I wanted to express my thanks and respect for him, acknowledging his faith in me.”
Years of his father's sacrifices have finally borne fruit. “When my father supported my cricketing dreams, many thought he was foolish, believing I would fail. Now, I am just happy; my father can walk with pride,” Mangesh said.
Ramavadh concluded, “I never imagined a truck driver could earn such respect. Mangesh has given me more than I could ever wish for.”
