Maibam Gulubi Shines with Gold at Asian Bench Press Championships

A Journey of Strength and Determination

Imphal (Manipur) [India], October 10: Maibam Gulubi, a powerlifter from Manipur, has made remarkable strides in her athletic career, transitioning from lifting gas cylinders to clinching a gold medal for India at the Asian Bench Press Championships in Istanbul. She attributes her success to the unwavering support of her family and coaches.

Gulubi secured the gold in the junior women's 57-kg category during the 2026 Asian Classic and Equipped Bench Press Championships, which took place in Istanbul, Turkiye, from September 21 to 27. In a recent conversation, she shared her journey into powerlifting and expressed gratitude to those who have supported her along the way.

Having started her powerlifting journey just two years ago, Gulubi has shown impressive growth. Inspired by her father, a passionate weightlifter, she developed an interest in the sport early on. She often showcased her abilities at local sports events, where encouragement from seniors motivated her to pursue weightlifting seriously.

In her initial training days, she lifted heavy weights and gas cylinders, driven by her father's enthusiasm and her own dedication. "I am thankful to my parents, family, coaches, Sir Inao, Madam Sushila, my sisters Rojita and Annu, friends, colleagues, and local elders, including my uncle and aunt, for their love and support," Gulubi remarked.

Her gold medal at the continental championship is a significant achievement for the young athlete, who represented India in the junior women's 57-kg category at an event organized by the Asian Powerlifting Federation.

The championship included both classic and equipped bench press competitions across various age groups and weight classes. The classic category does not allow specialized supportive bench press shirts, while the equipped category permits approved supportive gear.

After her triumphant return, Gulubi met with Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the Secretariat in Mantripukhri last week. The Chief Minister congratulated her on her achievement, emphasizing her contribution to both the state and the nation in a post on X.

"I had the pleasure of meeting the talented powerlifter Km. Maibam Gulubi at my Secretariat today. She won Gold for India in the Junior Women’s 57-kg category at the Asian Bench Press Championships, 2026, held in Istanbul, Türkiye. Her outstanding achievement has brought pride to our state and country. May she continue to inspire our young athletes and reach even greater heights," he stated on X.

Gulubi's success has highlighted Manipur's growing recognition in the international powerlifting arena, and she is eager to build on her accomplishments at the continental level.
