Exciting Developments in the Global Chess League

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], September 4: The upcoming fourth season of the Global Chess League (GCL) is set to be an exhilarating event as world number one Magnus Carlsen makes his comeback after a year away, joining the defending champions, Alpine APL Pipers. Meanwhile, two-time champions Triveni Continental Kings are keen to secure their third title in four years, having retained their core team. The GCL trophy was unveiled in Bengaluru on September 4, marking the beginning of this eagerly awaited season.

As stated in a press release, the Global Chess League, a collaborative effort between Tech Mahindra and FIDE, has quickly become one of the premier team competitions in the global chess calendar, returning to India for the second consecutive year.

This season has attracted some of the finest players in the world for a nine-day tournament, featuring six teams competing in a double round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the Grand Finale on September 13.

During a press conference, GCL Chairman Peeyush Dubey expressed the league's goal of making chess a family-friendly experience, describing Season 4 as an enhanced version with top-tier global players and significant corporate backing.

“At the Global Chess League, we believe chess is a sport that families can enjoy together. We aim to create a festival atmosphere around chess, and I’m thrilled to announce that Season 4 is bigger and better in every way,” he remarked.

In addition to Carlsen, notable players such as 2026 Candidates winner Javokhir Sindarov, Alireza Firouzja, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Viswanathan Anand, and Ian Nepomniachtchi will serve as icon players for their respective teams.

Carlsen, who played for the Pipers in the first two seasons held in Dubai and London, missed the last season in Mumbai, where the Pipers denied Triveni Continental Kings a third consecutive title. The Pipers have bolstered their lineup by adding Divya Deshmukh, India’s first Women’s World Cup winner, alongside seasoned player Koneru Humpy on the women’s board, while Dutch GM Anish Giri and India’s Vidit Gujrathi will take charge on the other two men’s boards.

Regarding his return, the Norwegian Grandmaster expressed his enthusiasm for the format and his commitment to helping the team defend their title.

“I’m a bit surprised to be back, especially after a couple of frustrating years for the team. The first two years were challenging, and while I was away, the team won it all. This time, I’m focused on doing my best to maintain our success,” Carlsen stated.

The GCL is also enhancing the overall spectator experience with each edition, and this year will introduce several new innovations.

Gourav Rakshit, Commissioner of the Global Chess League, mentioned, “Our goal is to bring chess to life for audiences, whether they are seasoned fans or newcomers. We’re implementing innovations to achieve this. Chess doesn’t need artificial drama; it’s our duty to showcase the inherent excitement of the game.”

Fans attending the matches will enjoy live commentary through personalized headsets and can follow the action on large screens. Additionally, chess enthusiasts across the country can engage with the Grandmasters via the GCL app, testing their skills against the best.

Viewers can choose to focus on specific boards or players, while also observing the reactions of team members from the dugout. This year, team coaches and captains will wear heart-rate monitors to track their stress levels during matches.

The season will kick off with an exciting opening match between PBG Alaskan Knights and Fyers American Gambits on Saturday, followed by Triveni Continental Kings facing Ganges Grandmasters and CheQ Mumba Masters taking on the defending champions, Alpine APL Pipers.

Carlsen’s return has been a major highlight of Season 4, but 15-year-old Turkish GM Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus will also debut for Alaskan Knights alongside the legendary Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand.

At 56, Anand, who played for Ganges Grandmasters in the previous three seasons, has joined Alaskan Knights this year, leading one of the tournament's youngest teams, which includes India’s Arjun Erigaisi and Abhimanyu Mishra, who will also make his league debut.

“Playing with Vishy and Arjun is going to be an incredible experience. We have a strong team, and I’m excited to be here for the first time. I hope we can win the tournament,” said Erdogmus.

Meanwhile, two-time champions Triveni Continental Kings have kept their established core intact, with Alireza Firouzja leading the team and receiving support from Wei Yi, Alexandra Kosteniuk, and Zhu Jiner.

Commenting on her team’s preparations, former women’s world champion Kosteniuk said, “I’m thrilled to play for Triveni Continental Kings again. Winning this title twice before feels great, but it would be even more satisfying to secure a third title.”

CheQ Mumba Masters, led by Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Fyers American Gambits, led by Sindarov, are also optimistic about their chances this season.

Maxime expressed, “I’m very pleased with our team and the spirit we’ve built over the seasons. Although we haven’t seen results on the board in the past three seasons, I’m confident in Mumba Masters and hope to repay their trust with strong performances.”

Sindarov, playing on the icon board for the first time, shared his enjoyment of the league’s format and the added responsibility of competing on the first board.
