Contrasting Perspectives on the Upcoming Championship

As the world anticipates Gukesh Dommaraju's title defense against Javokhir Sindarov later this year, World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and five-time champion Viswanathan Anand have expressed differing opinions. Sindarov earned his spot in this championship after a remarkable victory at the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament, with the title match expected to take place between November and December.

During a Chessparty event in Stockholm, Carlsen expressed his support for Sindarov, stating, “Currently, it’s hard to overlook Sindarov. While anything can happen in a championship match, I’m genuinely curious about what he will bring to the table in the coming months.” He highlighted the contrasting styles of the two players, noting, “Gukesh has clear weaknesses in his understanding, whereas Sindarov appears to be more well-rounded.”

World No. 3 Fabiano Caruana took a more measured stance, cautioning against assuming Sindarov's victory. “It’s tempting to declare Sindarov the winner, but Gukesh has proven himself in high-stakes tournaments like the Olympiad and the Candidates. Can we really write off a 19-year-old after a rough patch? I believe Gukesh can bounce back,” Caruana remarked. He also questioned whether Sindarov would maintain his current form, suggesting that if he does, he could be unstoppable.

Meanwhile, Anand emphasized the importance of managing pressure and criticism for Gukesh. He advised, “Concentrate on what you can control and disregard external noise. Being a world champion doesn’t guarantee a flawless life; pressure and expectations are inherent.” Anand acknowledged that some criticism may be warranted if performance declines, but he stressed that the ultimate response lies in delivering results. He concluded with a straightforward message: “Isolate yourself, disconnect, and focus on achieving success, as nothing quiets doubts like winning.”

Additionally, the upcoming title match between Gukesh and Sindarov is poised to be the youngest championship match in history. Sindarov also shared his preference for the match's location, expressing a desire for a warm climate, stating, “If it’s in December, I would prefer a hot country like Cyprus. I’m not keen on playing in cold weather.” While the exact venue and dates are still to be determined, the event is slated for late 2026.
