M S Dhoni's Tax Achievement

M S Dhoni, who stepped away from international cricket six years ago, has been recognized as the leading individual taxpayer in both Bihar and Jharkhand for the fiscal year 2025-2026.

Dr. D Sudhakara Rao, the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax for the Bihar-Jharkhand region, reported that the total tax collection for this financial year reached approximately Rs 20,000 crore, with Rs 12,000 crore sourced solely from Jharkhand.

According to Rao, "M S Dhoni was the top individual taxpayer across Bihar and Jharkhand in the last financial year," although he did not reveal the specifics of Dhoni's tax return.

Additionally, it was noted that Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), and CMPDI ranked among the top corporate taxpayers.

Rao mentioned that mining operations faced some disruptions due to heavy rainfall, which affected tax collection in the previous year. He expressed optimism about surpassing the Rs 20,000 crore target in the current fiscal year.

He explained that Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) constitutes around 70% of the total tax collected, highlighting that only 40 lakh out of approximately 5.5 crore PAN card holders in the region file their tax returns.

Earlier, Rao convened a meeting with IT officers to discuss the upcoming Income Tax Act, 2025, which is set to replace the long-standing Income Tax Act of 1961 on April 1. This meeting included around 100 officials from both states.

Rao emphasized that the new Act aims to enhance clarity and compliance through straightforward language, a more organized structure, and a user-friendly format, while maintaining the core tax policies.

He also mentioned that various outreach programs will be initiated in Bihar and Jharkhand to inform bankers, public sector units, and other stakeholders about the details of the new tax regulations.
