Injury Incident During IPL 2026

Lungi Ngidi, a key player for the Delhi Capitals (DC), suffered a head injury during a match against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in IPL 2026. The incident occurred early in the run chase when Ngidi attempted to catch a ball hit by PBKS opener Priyansh Arya. Following the injury, he was transported off the field via ambulance and later taken to a hospital, where it was confirmed that his condition was stable.

Due to the injury, DC was allowed to use a concussion substitute, although it could not be a direct replacement. Among the five players listed as potential substitutes, Dushmantha Chameera was unable to step in. Instead, spin-bowling all-rounder Vipraj Nigam took Ngidi's place, a decision that left many puzzled since DC could not substitute Chameera.

Chameera's absence was due to an IPL regulation that restricts teams to four overseas players per match. Venugopal Rao, the Director of Cricket for DC, explained that the rule prohibits the inclusion of a fifth overseas player, stating, "Only four overseas players are allowed. There is a rule. We cannot take a fifth overseas player."

Understanding the IPL Concussion Rule

What Does The IPL Rule State?

The IPL rule 1.2.6 specifies that a team cannot have more than four overseas players on the field at any time during a match. If a team lists fewer than four overseas players in its starting lineup, those players may only enter the field as substitutes if it does not increase the total number of overseas players beyond four.

Despite Chameera's potential to challenge batters with his pace, Nigam was the only viable option. Axar Patel had to rely on a leg spinner while Auqib Nabi and Mukesh Kumar struggled with their bowling. Nigam managed to dismiss left-handed batter Nehal Wadhera, defying conventional matchups, and created a significant chance when Shreyas Iyer mishandled a shot. However, Karun Nair dropped a catch near the boundary, resulting in 24 runs conceded over two overs.

Future Matches and Player Updates

As DC prepares to face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 27, Ngidi's availability remains uncertain. Mitchell Starc, an Australian left-arm pacer, could have been a straightforward substitute, but reports indicate he will be increasing his workload and may be available for the match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on May 1. If Starc is unavailable for the RCB match, Chameera is likely to be the next option, and DC may also consider giving Kyle Jamieson his franchise debut.
