Lungi Ngidi Remains Optimistic After Day 2 of World Test Championship Final

Ngidi's Confidence Shines Through

London [UK] June 13: Following the conclusion of Day 2 in the World Test Championship Final at Lord's, South African bowler Lungi Ngidi expressed his belief that his team still had a chance to turn the match around. Despite being bowled out for just 138 runs in their first innings, Ngidi noted that the bowlers performed admirably and emphasized the importance of playing with conviction as instructed by their coach.

Australia ended Day 2 with a score of 144/8, extending their lead to 218 runs against South Africa at the iconic Home of Cricket.

Ngidi stated, “We are still in the game. They bowled exceptionally well, but we have a task ahead of us. Our coach urged us to approach our roles with conviction and to make our exits on our own terms. Anyone can be the one to change the game for the team, and that was our mindset,” after the day's play.

Reflecting on his performance, Ngidi admitted that the first innings was challenging and that he felt nervous after the tea break. However, with guidance from Bavuma, he managed to regain his rhythm.

“The first innings was tough; I struggled to find my rhythm and felt like I was battling while bowling. I had some nerves returning after tea, especially knowing the caliber of the batsmen at the crease. But Bavuma encouraged me to focus on my spell, and once I found my rhythm, I kept pushing forward,” he explained.

Ngidi found the atmosphere exhilarating, noting that hearing his name from the crowd energized him during his lengthy bowling spell. He expressed confidence in their position, stating, “If we can wrap it up in two balls, we’ll be in a good spot. Chasing anything under 230 won’t be easy against their bowling attack, but we aim to give ourselves the best chance.”

On Day 2, Ngidi was the standout bowler for South Africa, claiming three crucial wickets. Rabada also made a significant contribution, taking five wickets for 51 runs in the first innings, helping to dismiss Australia for 212 runs on Wednesday, and added three more wickets by the end of Day 2, becoming the fifth leading wicket-taker for South Africa across all formats.
