Lucknow Super Giants Face Setback in IPL 2026 Opener Against Delhi Capitals
Disappointing Start for Lucknow Super Giants
The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), under the leadership of Rishabh Pant, began their IPL 2026 campaign with a disappointing six-wicket loss to the Delhi Capitals (DC). Batting first, LSG could only post a total of 142 runs, which proved insufficient despite having a strong position during DC's innings.
Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of LSG, was present at the match to support his team. After the game, he met with head coach Justin Langer and captain Pant. Shortly after, he took to social media to express his thoughts on the match, emphasizing the importance of such experiences in building a successful team. Goenka stated, 'This is a long season, and moments like these are part of building something meaningful. I have full confidence in our captain and the team to respond with strength. To our fans, thank you for your support at Ekana today; we will come back stronger. The story of @LucknowIPL this season is far from written.'
LSG's batting performance was lackluster, with Pant dismissed early in the innings. He opened alongside Mitchell Marsh, but Aiden Markram only managed 11 runs, and Ayush Badoni went out without scoring. Nicholas Pooran added just 8 runs. Marsh's 35 and Abdul Samad's 36 off 25 balls were the highlights of LSG's innings. For DC, Lungi Ngidi and T Natarajan each took three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Marsh and Mukhul Choudhary.
On the bowling front, LSG started strong, taking early wickets. Mohammed Shami dismissed KL Rahul for a golden duck, and Mohsin Khan sent Nitish Rana back for 15 runs. Uncapped Prince Yadav also made an impact by taking out Pathum Nissanka (1) and Axar Patel. LSG seemed to be in control, but Sameer Rizvi and Tritan Stubbs turned the game around with a crucial partnership of 119 runs off just 76 balls for the fifth wicket. Rizvi finished unbeaten with 70 runs off 47 balls, while Stubbs contributed 39 runs off 32 balls.
Looking ahead, LSG will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next IPL 2026 match on April 5.
