Lucknow Super Giants Aim for IPL Glory with Enhanced Squad Strategy
Sanjiv Goenka Sets High Expectations for LSG
On March 25, Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), expressed that the team's performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has not met expectations, despite the franchise reaching the playoffs twice. As IPL 2026 approaches, Goenka is raising the stakes for his players, seeking the respect and admiration that top teams command in the premier T20 league. He stated, “Our true identity is still developing. A sports team only garners the same level of respect that comes with winning a trophy.” He acknowledged that while reaching the playoffs is commendable, it is insufficient without securing a championship title.
Reflecting on the previous season, where LSG, under Rishabh Pant's captaincy, finished seventh, Goenka noted that injuries to key bowlers significantly impacted their performance. He highlighted that despite these challenges, the team managed to win four out of their first six matches. Goenka mentioned some strategic decisions, such as Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh opening the batting, which proved beneficial for both players. He also praised newcomer Digvesh Rathi for his contributions. However, he recognized the need for a robust bowling lineup, which they have focused on improving by developing a strong domestic Indian bowling unit.
Tom Moody, ahead of LSG's IPL 2026 opener against Delhi Capitals on April 1, emphasized the importance of their Indian pacers. He remarked that the preparation leading into 2025 was not optimal, with several players lacking fitness. The current squad boasts a high-quality domestic fast-bowling attack, bolstered by the acquisition of Mohammed Shami, who is expected to lead the group. Moody expressed satisfaction with the improvements made, including the addition of a new medical team, and noted that the competition among fast bowlers is creating a selection dilemma, which is a positive sign as they head into the first match.
