Lovlina Borgohain's Visit to Flood-Affected Assam
Golaghat (Assam) - On August 7, Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain visited victims affected by the floods in Assam, expressing her deep concern over the devastating situation. She described the destruction as extensive and alarming.
As of Friday morning, significant portions of Golaghat district were still submerged, with rising water levels in the Dhansiri and Doyang rivers forcing numerous families to evacuate their homes and seek refuge in relief camps.
In an interview, Borgohain highlighted the plight of many individuals who have lost their homes and are currently without shelter, despite receiving food and clothing supplies. She urged local authorities to prioritize housing solutions to aid the recovery of affected families.
“The conditions here are truly heartbreaking; the devastation is visible everywhere. Homes have been obliterated, leaving people in dire circumstances. Many are without roofs over their heads, forced to find makeshift spots to sleep. It raises concerns about how and when normalcy will return. Recovery will take considerable time,” she stated.
“We hope for a swift improvement in the situation and that these individuals find the resilience to navigate this crisis. Immediate shelter is crucial. While they are receiving food and clothing, the lack of homes to store these essentials is a significant issue. If the government could expedite housing solutions, it would provide immense relief,” she added.
At the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow, Borgohain earned her first CWG medal, securing silver in the women's 75kg boxing category after a closely contested final against Australia's Emma-Sue Greentree.
As the final bell rang, both competitors raised their hands, confident in their performances. However, after a tense deliberation, the judges awarded the victory to Greentree with a 4-1 split decision, allowing Lovlina to add a silver medal to her impressive international accolades, which include an Olympic bronze, multiple World Championship medals, an Asian Games silver, and several Asian Championship medals, including a gold.
