Lovlina Borgohain's Joyful Encounter with PM Modi

In Guwahati, Assam, Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain, who clinched a silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, shared her delight in meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She also discussed the recognition she received for her stance on the Indian map issue at a Glasgow restaurant, while expressing her sorrow over the floods affecting Assam.

Borgohain had the opportunity to meet PM Modi during a gathering at his residence with India's medalists on Monday.

In an interview, Borgohain expressed her joy at reconnecting with PM Modi, commending his unwavering support for athletes. She noted that this was her sixth encounter with him, highlighting how fortunate current athletes are to have such opportunities compared to previous generations.

“After returning from the Commonwealth Games, I visited flood victims in Assam. Shortly after, I received an invitation to meet PM Modi, which I quickly accepted. Each time I meet him, it feels wonderful. I’ve met him during the Olympics and every Commonwealth and Asian Games. His motivation and support are invaluable. Previous athletes could never have imagined meeting the Prime Minister, but we are lucky to have this chance. He engages with us personally after every competition,” she remarked.

During their meeting, PM Modi inquired about the incident at the Glasgow restaurant where Borgohain had raised concerns over a misrepresented Indian map.

Borgohain shared that PM Modi commended her for her actions, and his acknowledgment of her efforts to assist flood victims filled her with pride and happiness.

“He praised me for addressing the map issue at the restaurant, which made me feel appreciated. He acknowledged my visit to the flood victims and spoke highly of my efforts, which is a unique feeling when the Prime Minister recognizes you,” she added.

On August 8, Borgohain visited flood-affected individuals in Golaghat, expressing her deep concern over the dire situation and the extensive damage caused.

While in Glasgow, she was troubled by videos depicting the floods in Assam and sought to assist in any way possible. She acknowledged the support from the government and various organizations but emphasized the need for the crisis to end soon so that affected individuals can begin to rebuild their lives.

“Watching the videos from Glasgow was heartbreaking. It’s difficult to see our people in such distress. I did what I could from there. This is a significant issue, and its resolution remains uncertain. Many are coming forward to help, and our Chief Minister is actively involved. It’s reassuring to see the support, but once the crisis is over, rebuilding will be a challenge. I can only hope for a swift resolution,” she stated.

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Borgohain achieved her first CWG medal, earning silver in the women's 75kg boxing category after a tightly contested final against Australia's Emma-Sue Greentree.
