Lovepreet Singh's Impressive Performance
Glasgow [Scotland], July 31: Indian weightlifter Lovepreet Singh has achieved a remarkable silver medal in the men's +110 kg heavyweight division during the Commonwealth Games 2026.
Throughout the competition, Lovepreet showcased an exceptional performance, appearing poised to claim gold until a dramatic final lift by New Zealand's David Andrew Liti shifted the outcome, according to reports from ESPN.
The Indian athlete was outstanding from his initial lift to his fifth attempt, maintaining a strong lead and demonstrating control in the race for gold.
Lovepreet established his dominance with three successful lifts in the snatch, achieving a maximum lift of 176 kg.
However, Liti delivered a breathtaking moment by lifting an impressive 223 kg in the clean and jerk during his final attempt, clinching victory.
This lift allowed the New Zealander to overcome a significant 15 kg deficit, narrowly surpassing Lovepreet by just one kilogram, denying him the gold despite his stellar performance.
This silver medal marks an improvement from the bronze he secured at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
With Lovepreet's achievement, India added another medal to its collection as the weightlifting events at the Commonwealth Games 2026 concluded.
His silver medal represents India's ninth medal in weightlifting and para-weightlifting combined.
In other news, Indian sprinter Animesh Kujur concluded his journey at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Thursday, failing to qualify for the men's 200m final.
The 23-year-old finished sixth in semifinal two with a time of 20.65 seconds, placing 17th overall among 24 competitors.
Animesh's semifinal performance was notably slower than his season-best of 20.46 seconds, which had previously secured him a spot in the heats.
Additionally, Indian shot putters Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill put forth commendable efforts in the men's shot put final but fell short of podium finishes.
Toor finished fifth with a best throw of 20.27 meters, while Gill placed seventh with a season-best throw of 20.03 meters at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.
