Glasgow [Scotland], July 31: Indian weightlifter Lovepreet Singh expressed his disappointment after narrowly missing the gold medal by a mere kilogram at the Commonwealth Games 2026. However, he remains determined to return stronger in future events, particularly the Asian Games.
Singh dedicated his silver medal to his coach, Vijay Sharma, officials from the Indian Weightlifting Federation, the Indian Government, and Captain Vijay Kumar of the Indian Navy, expressing gratitude for their unwavering support throughout his journey.
In the men’s +110 kg heavyweight category at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026, Singh secured the silver medal.
"Missing out on gold is painful. I’m committed to improving in upcoming competitions like the Asian Games. I want to dedicate this medal to my coach, Vijay Sharma, Sahdev Sir from the Indian Weightlifting Federation, the Indian Government, and Captain Vijay Kumar of the Indian Navy. Their support has been invaluable, and I sincerely thank them," Singh stated.
Throughout the competition, Lovepreet showcased remarkable skill and composure, maintaining a strong lead from his initial lift to his fifth attempt, appearing in control of the gold medal chase.
He took the lead with three successful lifts in the snatch, achieving a personal best of 176 kg.
However, Liti delivered a stunning performance, lifting an impressive 223 kg in the clean and jerk during his final attempt, clinching victory.
The New Zealander overcame a significant 15 kg deficit with that single lift, narrowly edging out Lovepreet by just one kilogram, denying the Indian weightlifter a gold medal despite his exceptional performance.
This silver medal represents an improvement from the bronze he earned at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
With Lovepreet's silver, India added another medal to its tally as the weightlifting events at the Commonwealth Games 2026 concluded.
His silver medal marks India's ninth medal in weightlifting and para-weightlifting combined.
