Lovepreet Singh Reflects on His Performance
Indian weightlifter Lovepreet Singh, who earned a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, has stated his commitment to enhancing his performance following his record-setting achievement in Glasgow. Speaking during a celebration hosted by the Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Lovepreet emphasized the need for rigorous training to elevate his skills further.
At the CWG 2026, Lovepreet achieved a remarkable total lift of 388 kg, setting a Commonwealth Games record, although he was narrowly surpassed by New Zealand's David Liti, who lifted 389 kg in total. Notably, Lovepreet's lift of 176 kg remains a record for the Commonwealth Games.
In his remarks, Lovepreet expressed appreciation for the recognition from the Sports Minister and highlighted how the prize money would significantly assist him with personal and athletic expenses. He also encouraged young athletes to embrace hard work and discipline.
He stated, "I am grateful to the Sports Minister for the warm welcome extended to our team. The prize money is invaluable for my training and competition travel. My family is thrilled, and I've received numerous congratulatory messages from my village. My advice to the youth is to remain dedicated, disciplined, and maintain a healthy diet."
The Indian weightlifting team secured a total of eight medals at the CWG 2026, including one gold, six silvers, and one bronze. A standout moment was Mirabai Chanu's gold in the women's 48 kg category, marking her third consecutive Commonwealth gold.
The 2026 Games adopted a compact format, which led to the exclusion of several traditional Indian medal-winning events such as shooting, wrestling, and badminton.
India concluded the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in fourth place on the medal tally, amassing 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze. The nation has officially embarked on its journey to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, with the Commonwealth Games Flag ceremonially handed over during a vibrant Closing Ceremony that celebrated the end of Glasgow 2026 and looked forward to the historic centenary edition.
This handover marks the return of the Commonwealth Games to India for the first time since the 2010 edition in New Delhi and the inaugural event in Gujarat. It signifies a new era for Indian sports as the country prepares to welcome athletes from across the Commonwealth for the landmark 2030 edition.
With the ceremonial transfer of the Commonwealth Games Flag to India for the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is focused on reviving traditional sports while developing world-class facilities to achieve a record medal tally.
