Kansas City [US], June 16: Ahead of their FIFA World Cup opener against Algeria, Argentina's coach Lionel Scaloni and defender Nicolas Otamendi emphasized the crucial role of Lionel Messi in their squad.

Messi, who achieved the pinnacle of football by winning the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022, remains a focal point as he aims for consecutive titles in what may be his final World Cup appearance.

Scaloni expressed to reporters, "Everyone wants to see him on the pitch." He added, "Not just Argentines; we believe everyone is eager to watch him play."

Although Messi missed a friendly match against Honduras on June 6, which Argentina won 2-0, he came off the bench in their recent 3-0 victory over Iceland, successfully converting a penalty. Scaloni has downplayed any worries regarding the 38-year-old's fitness, asserting that Messi has always been "fundamental" to the team, even amidst recent fatigue and health concerns.

"He has always been there for us, and now even more so," the coach remarked.

Otamendi, Messi's longtime teammate, praised him as "the best player in history" and a "competitive animal." He reflected on their shared experiences, stating, "We have enjoyed many beautiful moments together."

He continued, "Messi is a humble individual who relishes training and prepares diligently. His competitive nature inspires us to strive harder, to support him, and to keep up with him," he concluded.

Argentina kicks off their World Cup journey against Algeria on June 16, followed by matches against Austria on June 22 and Jordan on June 28 in Group J. A victory in the tournament would mark their fourth World Cup title.
