Dawson Steps In for Injured Bashir

London [UK], July 15: England has announced the inclusion of experienced spinner Liam Dawson in their squad for the fourth Test match against India, set to take place in Manchester next week.

Dawson replaces young bowler Shoaib Bashir, who suffered a left-hand injury during the recently concluded third Test at Lord's. Bashir was hit on his hand by a low drive from Ravindra Jadeja while attempting a caught-and-bowled opportunity on the third day.

He promptly signaled for medical assistance and left the field for treatment. During England's defense of a 193-run lead, Bashir spent most of the final day off the field but returned to bowl in the closing moments. Despite the pain, he managed to deliver the final blow, dismissing Mohammed Siraj with a ball that spun back into the stumps, leaving the Indian bowler stunned. Bashir celebrated with his teammates as England secured a thrilling 22-run victory.

Having last played a Test for England in July 2017, Dawson has been in excellent form in the County Championship, taking 21 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 2.55 for Hampshire. He also contributed significantly with the bat, scoring 536 runs at an average of 44.66, including a high score of 139.

At 35 years old, Dawson has been a reliable performer for Hampshire over the years and was honored as the PCA Player of the Year in both 2023 and 2024. He is eager to earn his third Test cap in the upcoming match against India.

“Liam Dawson has earned his selection. His outstanding performances in the County Championship have been commendable,” stated Luke Wright, England Men’s National Selector, in a release from the ECB.

Seam bowlers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton, who were part of the squad for the previous three Tests, have returned to their counties to participate in the County Championship.

England's squad for the fourth Test against India includes: Ben Stokes (Captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, and Chris Woakes.
