Lhuan-dre Pretorius Shines with 94 Runs in Tri-Nation Series Against Zimbabwe

Windhoek, Namibia - On September 2, South African cricketer Lhuan-dre Pretorius delivered an impressive performance, scoring 94 runs in a match against Zimbabwe during the ongoing tri-nation series that also includes Namibia. After experiencing a series of low scores, Pretorius sought advice from former Proteas player Heinrich Klaasen, who has extensive T20 experience from various leagues around the globe.

Pretorius had previously achieved his first T20 century with the San Francisco Unicorns against MI New York in the Major League Cricket (MLC). However, he faced a challenging period, going six innings without reaching fifty, despite scoring two half-centuries for London Spirit in The Hundred. His initial outings in the tri-nation series were modest, with scores of 9 and 22, but he turned things around against Zimbabwe, hitting 94 off just 51 balls, including 12 fours and three sixes, leading the Proteas to a total of 185/7 while limiting Zimbabwe to 142 all out.

Before this match, Pretorius had accumulated only 209 runs in his last nine innings, averaging 23.22 with two fifties.

In Windhoek, he shared, "I spoke to Heinrich Klaasen. After a few low scores in The Hundred and the first two games here, I felt it was important to reach out to him. He has played a lot of T20 cricket and has experienced the highs and lows, making him a great person to consult."

While acknowledging the differences in their batting positions—Pretorius as a top-order batsman and Klaasen in the middle—he emphasized that their conversation focused on mindset.

Pretorius noted, "We can relate to each other, and he really helped me with my approach going into today's game." Despite the pressure of wickets falling at the other end, he managed to face only 12 balls between overs 16-19, making it difficult to secure a century. He expressed that while he looks forward to achieving personal milestones, he prioritizes team success over individual accolades.

"I wasn't overly concerned about it. I believe milestones will come and go. This is a team sport. If I were focused on personal achievements, I might as well play tennis or golf," he remarked.

In his T20I career, Pretorius has scored 326 runs in 16 innings, averaging 20.37 with a strike rate of 141.73, including two fifties.

In the match, South Africa opted to bat first, with Pretorius (94 runs off 51 balls) and Dewald Brevis (41 runs off 27 balls) contributing significantly to the team's total, despite a late collapse from 154/1 to 185/7, thanks to the efforts of Zimbabwe's bowlers Wessly Madhevere (3/20), Brad Evans (2/33), and Newman Nyamhuri (1/30).

In response, South Africa's bowlers, led by captain Bjorn Fortuin (4/24) and Duan Jansen (3/21), effectively restricted Zimbabwe to 142 all out. Sikandar Raza (45 runs off 33 balls) and Nyamhuru (27 runs off 25 balls) were the standout performers for Zimbabwe.

Currently, South Africa leads the table with two wins and one loss. Namibia is set to face both Zimbabwe and South Africa in upcoming matches to determine the finalists, with both teams currently holding two points each. Zimbabwe has one win and two losses, while Namibia has one win and one loss.
