Leon Goretzka Aims to Reignite German Football Spirit Ahead of World Cup
Germany's Quest for Redemption in the World Cup
Houston, June 8: Leon Goretzka, the former Bayern Munich midfielder, expressed Germany's determination to rectify past failures after two consecutive group stage exits in the FIFA World Cups of 2014 and 2018. He emphasized that reflecting on previous mistakes won't aid their cause as they prepare to win back the support of German fans.
Germany is set to kick off their World Cup journey against Curacao on June 14 in Houston, competing in Group E alongside Curacao, Ecuador, and Ivory Coast. Following their triumph in the 2014 tournament, the team faced early exits in the subsequent two editions, and now they aim to secure their fifth star.
In an interview with FIFA, Goretzka highlighted that the primary motivation for him and his teammates is to regain the trust of their supporters. He stated, "We want to correct our past. While the memories of those failures no longer haunt us, the connection with our fans has diminished, and we are eager to restore that bond. This is my main personal drive, and it resonates with the entire team."
He acknowledged the importance of learning from past errors but reiterated that focusing on them would be counterproductive. Instead, the team is looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead, confident in their capabilities.
Despite Germany's current ranking of 10th in the world, Goretzka does not view them as frontrunners for the title. He remarked on the distinct circumstances compared to previous tournaments, asserting that they can achieve significant results if they maintain fitness and form.
Goretzka stated, "We may not be among the top favorites, but expectations are high for us as a footballing nation, and rightly so. With our talented roster, if we stay fit and cohesive, we can accomplish great things in this World Cup. If we develop as a unit throughout the tournament, the possibilities are endless. However, I don't see us as top contenders."
Regarding head coach Julian Nagelsmann's emphasis on intensity, physicality, and fighting spirit, Goretzka affirmed that these traits are crucial for the team's success.
He added, "The potential is there; we just need to ensure we harness it in every match."
When discussing the keys to a successful World Cup campaign, he stressed the importance of team cohesion and understanding each other's roles on the pitch.
Goretzka concluded, "Physicality will be vital. Having played in the Club World Cup last year, I know the conditions will be challenging. Being in peak condition is essential, and as in any tournament, luck will play a significant role. If everything aligns, we can go far."
