Laura Wolvaardt Climbs to Third in ICC Women's T20I Rankings After Stellar Series Against India
Wolvaardt's Remarkable Performance
In Johannesburg, South Africa, Laura Wolvaardt, the captain of the national team, has achieved a career milestone by securing the third position in the latest ICC Women’s T20I Player Rankings. This recognition comes after her outstanding performances against India, where she showcased her batting prowess.
Wolvaardt delivered an exceptional century during the third match of the five-game series, contributing significantly to her team's success with a total of 330 runs, which included a century and three half-centuries. Her efforts were instrumental in South Africa's impressive 4-1 series victory, earning her the Player of the Series title.
This achievement propelled her two spots up the rankings, placing her behind Georgia Voll, the top-ranked T20I batter. Wolvaardt's recent form is particularly timely as it precedes the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in England and Wales starting June 12.
Despite expressing concerns about her form just a month ago, Wolvaardt's current performance is vital for South Africa's aspirations in the upcoming World Cup. "I am very happy with my form at the moment," she remarked after the series concluded. "After a challenging tour in New Zealand, it feels great to turn things around. I can't pinpoint exactly what has changed, which is the intriguing aspect of cricket. In New Zealand, I struggled, but now I feel much more confident at the crease," she added.
Wolvaardt isn't the only player making strides in the rankings; Richa Ghosh has moved up two places to 22nd, while Sune Luus has climbed six spots to 29th, reflecting their strong performances throughout the series.
The competition among T20I bowlers remains fierce, with Pakistan's Sadia Iqbal leading the rankings. India’s Deepti Sharma has moved up one position, and South Africa’s Nonkululeko Mlaba has advanced two spots, both sharing the fourth position as the T20 World Cup approaches.
In addition, Shree Charani from India has achieved a career-high ranking, moving up 12 places to 11th after her impressive two-wicket haul in the final match against South Africa.
The ODI rankings have also seen some shifts following Bangladesh's recent home series against Sri Lanka, with several Bangladeshi players making notable gains. Nigar Sultana and Sobhana Mostary have improved their standings among ODI batters, while Nahida Akter and Marufa Akter have made significant advancements in the ODI bowlers' rankings.
Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu has also seen a rise, moving to ninth among ODI all-rounders and climbing seven spots to tie for 34th among ODI bowlers. Harshitha Samarawickrama has made headlines by moving up three places to equal 20th among ODI batters.
