Lalit Modi Advocates for Enhanced Cricket Infrastructure in Ahmedabad
Lalit Modi's Vision for Cricket Development
London [UK], June 4: Lalit Modi, the former chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a passionate cricket enthusiast. He shared that their discussions primarily focused on enhancing cricket facilities in Ahmedabad.
In an exclusive interview in London, Modi emphasized that PM Modi has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing cricket in Gujarat.
“Mr. Modi is a true cricket aficionado. My interactions with him revolved around his desire to promote cricket in Ahmedabad,” he stated.
These comments come in light of recent discussions initiated by Lalit Modi regarding the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He suggested that the stadium should be demolished and rebuilt to provide an improved experience for fans, a statement that has garnered significant attention as the venue is currently one of the top cricket stadiums globally.
Clarifying his previous statements, the former cricket administrator noted that he was not criticizing the stadium but rather advocating for a more ambitious vision for sports infrastructure in India.
“While it is the best stadium in India today, it still falls short. I mentioned that if I were to rebuild it, I would also consider tearing down other existing stadiums. If I were in charge, I would aim for an international-quality fan experience,” he explained.
Lalit Modi further argued that with the financial resources and global stature of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Indian cricket should strive to develop stadiums that rival the world's most renowned sporting venues.
“When you look at iconic venues like Wembley, Lord's, Camp Nou, Old Trafford, and the Etihad Stadium, they far surpass any stadium we have. The BCCI has the financial capability to achieve this,” he added.
The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad holds the title of the largest cricket stadium worldwide, accommodating around 132,000 spectators. It boasts 76 corporate boxes, four dressing rooms, and a spacious concourse designed for large crowds.
While recognizing the stadium's scale and importance, Lalit Modi questioned whether Indian cricket venues are being fully utilized outside of match days. He proposed transforming stadium complexes into comprehensive entertainment and commercial hubs that provide a modern and engaging experience for fans.
“Why not incorporate 10,000 underground parking spaces? Why not install modern escalators and food courts? We don’t lack funding; it will come naturally. If we create a venue that operates year-round, with shopping and dining options, it can be a world-class facility,” he concluded.
