France Dominates Sweden in World Cup Knockout Match

France achieved a remarkable 3-0 victory over Sweden, marking their largest win in a FIFA World Cup knockout round. This triumph mirrors their iconic 1998 final win against Brazil, where they also secured a three-goal margin. Kylian Mbappe, the team's captain, was the standout player, accomplishing a rare milestone at just 27 years old.

With this victory, France has now made history as the first team to win seven consecutive World Cup matches against European teams. Mbappe's two goals in this match propelled him to a total of 10 goals in knockout rounds, surpassing legends like Brazil’s Ronaldo Nazario and Leonidas, who each scored eight. Just Fontaine from France and Brazil’s Pele follow closely with seven goals each.

Mbappe initiated the scoring in the 45th minute with a stunning crossover step and added another in the second half, breaking the all-time knockout scoring record. Although he nearly scored earlier in the 20th minute, an offside ruling halted his attempt.

His first goal resulted from a rebound after Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom deflected a shot from Michael Olise. For his second goal, Mbappe displayed his creativity with a backheel pass to Bradley Barcola, who then linked up with Olise before Mbappe dashed into the box to score. This marked his seventh game with multiple goals in the tournament, setting a new record.

France has consistently scored at least three goals in their last five World Cup matches, establishing the longest such streak in the tournament's history.

With 10 goals in knockout matches and a total of 18 World Cup goals, Mbappe has surpassed Germany’s Miroslav Klose on the all-time scoring list. He is now just one goal shy of Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who has 19 goals. Both players have netted six goals in this tournament, but Mbappe's two assists give him an advantage in the race for the Golden Boot.

Reflecting on his performance, Mbappe stated, “I wanted to fully enjoy this World Cup. While I enjoyed the previous one, I was younger and focused solely on delivering top performances. Now, I believe I can balance both: performing well and enjoying the experience.”

With 18 goals in just 18 World Cup appearances, Mbappe is scoring at a faster rate than Messi, who has played 29 matches in the tournament.
