Kusal Mendis Discusses League Choices Amid Controversy

During a recent press conference, a reporter raised a contentious issue regarding the rivalry between the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The focus was on Sri Lankan cricketer Kusal Mendis, who recently joined Peshawar Zalmi. The reporter questioned Mendis about his decision to leave the PSL midway through the previous season to play for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL, prompting an awkward moment that required intervention from the moderator.

Before the start of the PSL 2026 season, Mendis signed with Peshawar Zalmi after previously playing eight matches for the Quetta Gladiators. He had exited the PSL due to security concerns and subsequently traveled to India to replace a player for the Gujarat Titans during the 2025 IPL playoffs. However, he was released by the Titans before the IPL 2026 auction and was unable to find a new team for the current season.

Returning to the PSL this year, Mendis has made a significant impact, scoring 241 runs in just four matches. When pressed about his past decision to leave the PSL for the IPL, the moderator reminded the reporter to keep questions focused on the PSL and Peshawar Zalmi's performance. Mendis chose to remain silent on the matter until another reporter took their turn.

Cricketers often face the dilemma of choosing between the IPL and PSL, as both leagues occur simultaneously. However, the IPL generally attracts more attention due to its financial rewards, competitive nature, and global popularity. Many international players typically sign with the PSL only if they are not picked in the IPL auction, and some have even left PSL franchises mid-season for IPL opportunities, as seen with Mendis last year.
