Chawla Shines on Opening Day

Hyderabad (Telangana) - On April 14, the IGU Telangana Amateur Golf Championship kicked off at the Hyderabad Golf Club, where young talent Krish Chawla delivered an outstanding performance, carding a bogey-free five-under 65.

The 17-year-old golfer from Chandigarh showcased remarkable skill, finishing the day with a one-shot advantage over competitors Shashank Sachin, Ranveer Mitroo, and Gulfam Hussain. Shamit Dakhane followed closely in fifth place, just one stroke behind.

Vinamra Anand, who claimed victory in the season opener, and Chaitanya Padey were tied for sixth at two-under 68. Last week’s champion, Ribhav Verma, faced challenges and ended the day tied for 16th with a score of one-over 71.

Chawla, in his inaugural full season on the amateur circuit, demonstrated precision off the tee and exceptional approach shots, hitting all 18 greens in regulation. Despite four near misses on the greens, he maintained a solid lead.

Starting strong, Chawla secured birdies on the par-3 holes, sinking a 20-footer on the third and landing his 5-iron tee shot just four feet from the pin on the fourth. Although he faced setbacks with lip-outs on the fifth and sixth, he rebounded with a birdie on the eighth, turning at three-under.

After missing opportunities on the 10th and 11th, Chawla struck the pin on the 12th with a well-placed 9-iron shot, adding another birdie on the par-3 16th to complete his flawless round.

Mitroo, who began his round on the 10th tee, had a strong front nine with four birdies but faltered slightly in the latter half, dropping a shot on the fourth before recovering with a birdie on the next hole, keeping the pressure on Chawla.

Leading scores after the first round: 65: Krish Chawla (Chd); 66: Shashank Sachin (Mah), Ranveer Mitroo (Del), Gulfam Hussain (Har); 67: Shamit Dakhane (Mah); 68: Chaitanya Pandey (Del), Vinamra Anand (UP); 69: Sunil S (Kar), Deepak Yadav (Del).
