KKR's Challenges in IPL 2026

New Delhi [India] - Former Indian cricketer Saba Karim has highlighted the significant experience within the Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) support staff and senior players. However, he noted that their strategic decisions have not been as effective, and key players have struggled to perform consistently during the IPL 2026 season.

The three-time champions KKR have yet to secure a victory in this tournament, facing defeats against the Mumbai Indians and the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Their match against the Punjab Kings was unfortunately abandoned due to rain and a wet outfield.

Karim remarked, “KKR boasts a wealth of experience among their support staff, including Shane Watson, Dwayne Bravo, Andre Russell, and Tim Southee, who are well-versed in various match situations and the dynamics of the IPL. However, the clarity in decision-making seems to be lacking, and the performance of key players has not been up to par, both with bat and ball,” during an interview on JioHotstar.

He further pointed out that even players like Sunil Narine, who has been performing well, have not been effectively utilized during the Powerplay, where they could have made a more significant impact.

“These are critical areas that KKR must address promptly, as a turnaround will not be easy,” Karim added.

The match between KKR and PBKS was called off at 10:58 PM IST on Monday, resulting in both teams receiving a point each.

The evening commenced with KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane winning the toss and opting to bat first, aiming to secure their first points after two consecutive losses.

However, the Punjab Kings' pace attack, spearheaded by the impressive Xavier Bartlett, quickly put KKR on the defensive.

Kolkata's costly overseas signing Cameron Green (4) fell early, followed by explosive opener Finn Allen (6), leaving KKR struggling at 16/2 within the first two overs. Angkrish Raghuvanshi (7*) joined Rahane (8*) to push the score to 25/2 after 3.4 overs before rain interrupted play.

The rain finally ceased around 10:30 PM, and while the Eden Gardens ground staff worked diligently to prepare the field for a five-over match, the waterlogged ground made it impossible to continue. Consequently, the captains of both teams shook hands at 10:58 PM.

Kolkata Knight Riders will aim for their first IPL victory on Thursday against the Lucknow Super Giants, while the Punjab Kings will head back to Mullanpur to face the Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 11.
