Kolkata Knight Riders' Challenging Start

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have had a rocky start in IPL 2026, appearing as one of the less competitive teams. After suffering consecutive losses to the Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), they finally managed to earn their first point when their match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) was canceled due to rain. Expectations were high for Cameron Green, KKR's marquee signing, who was acquired for a staggering Rs 25 crore during the auction. However, he has only managed to score 24 runs across three matches and is currently unable to bowl, as per Cricket Australia’s guidelines. Kevin Pietersen has voiced his criticism regarding Green's performance.

In a discussion with JioStar, Pietersen remarked that Cameron Green is not suited to bat at the number three position. He expressed his frustration over Green's inability to bowl, stating, "I prefer not to focus on the financial aspect, as earnings vary across sports. However, what truly matters is cricketing skill. To bat at number three in an IPL team, one must demonstrate the capability to perform at that level. I don't believe he is fit for that role. He hasn't bowled, so we must evaluate his contributions. While he did score a century in Mumbai a couple of years back, I haven't seen enough from Cam Green to justify his batting at number three and taking on that responsibility. He is primarily a middle-order batsman who bowls occasionally, and that’s his role."

Rovman Powell Suggested as Replacement

During the same conversation, former Indian all-rounder Sanjay Bangar suggested that Cameron Green may not be the ideal fit for a T20I player and proposed that Rovman Powell should take his place in the lineup. Bangar stated, "If Cameron Green isn't bowling, he doesn't fit the profile of a batsman in the overseas category. Therefore, it would be wise to consider Rovman Powell, who is a recognized T20 specialist and fulfills a specific role. I favor Powell because he is a proven asset rather than relying on the hope that someone will eventually perform."
