Kolkata Knight Riders Face Historic Defeat in IPL 2026
KKR's Struggles Continue
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have reached a new low after suffering a 65-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Eden Gardens on Thursday (April 2). This loss marks the first time this season that a team batting first has secured a victory. Under the captaincy of Ajinkya Rahane, KKR remains without a win in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), having previously lost their opening match against Mumbai Indians (MI) by five wickets. Despite scoring a formidable 220 runs, KKR could not defend their total, as MI chased it down with five balls remaining.
Historic Low for KKR
This defeat signifies only the second occasion in KKR's history where they have lost their first two matches of the season. The previous instance occurred 5107 days ago in 2012 when they were led by Gautam Gambhir and faced losses against Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab.
Hope for a Turnaround?
While this record is certainly disappointing for KKR, it could also serve as a potential turning point. In 2012, after a similar start, KKR went on to clinch their first title under Gambhir's captaincy. They finished second in the league and triumphed over Delhi Daredevils in the first qualifier before defeating the two-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. KKR's next match is scheduled for Monday (April 6) against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Eden Gardens, where they will be eager to secure their first points of the season. Another loss would mean a historic first, as they would start the season with three consecutive defeats.
