Kolkata Knight Riders Eye Future Leadership with Rinku Singh
Kolkata Knight Riders' Leadership Plans
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are anticipated to be a key team in the upcoming IPL 2026 season. As the reigning champions from IPL 2025, they faced challenges and did not progress to the playoffs. Despite this setback, the franchise has expressed confidence in their captain, Ajinkya Rahane, who will continue to lead the team. There are discussions about Rahane potentially remaining at the helm for IPL 2027, contingent on the team's performance in IPL 2026. However, a leadership transition may be on the horizon, with former cricketer Mohammad Kaif advocating for Rinku Singh to be groomed as the future captain.
On his YouTube channel, Kaif emphasized Rinku's readiness for the captaincy role, suggesting that he should be prioritized over Cameron Green. Rinku, who captains the Uttar Pradesh team in domestic cricket, has proven himself as a versatile player across formats. Kaif remarked, 'KKR should nurture Rinku Singh as a future leader. He is an all-format player, and while he may not be in the Test squad, his contributions are significant in all formats. His runs come in crucial situations, and he is prepared to take on the captaincy for UP.'
Rinku Singh joined KKR during the IPL 2018 mega-auction for ₹80 lakh and was re-signed for ₹55 lakh in the IPL 2022 auction. He was retained by KKR ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction. Although he played only 17 matches from 2018 to 2022, Rinku's consistent performance in IPL 2023 led to his first call-up to the Indian national team, where he was part of the victorious squad in the 2026 T20 World Cup. He also traveled with the Indian team as a reserve player during the 2024 T20 World Cup.
As for Cameron Green, he is set to make his debut with KKR in IPL 2026 after being acquired for ₹25.20 crore during the mini-auction. The Australian all-rounder was highly sought after, with multiple teams vying for his signature. Green, who debuted in the IPL in 2023, has played a total of 29 matches.
