KKR's Joyous Night at Eden Gardens

On Wednesday night, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who have clinched the championship three times, were filled with pride after witnessing an extraordinary performance by Finn Allen and Tim Seifert. Their remarkable display led New Zealand to a commanding victory in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal against South Africa at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Chasing a target of 170 runs, the New Zealand openers showcased their dominance by achieving the target in just 12.5 overs. Allen and Seifert formed a formidable partnership, scoring 117 runs in just 9.1 overs, marking a significant turnaround after a lackluster tournament. Allen set a new record for the fastest century in T20 World Cup history, reaching his hundred in just 33 balls, while Seifert contributed a solid 58 runs.

KKR's management expressed their delight over acquiring both players during the mini-player auction held in Abu Dhabi last December. Allen was signed for ₹2 crore, while Seifert was brought on board for ₹1.50 crore. All of KKR's home matches take place at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Record-Breaking Partnership

The duo of Allen and Seifert not only led their team to victory but also surpassed the previous record for the highest partnership aggregate in a single T20 World Cup edition, previously held by Afghanistan's Abrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz with 446 runs in 2024. With one match still to play, Allen and Seifert have accumulated a total of 446 runs together. Both players are currently among the top five run-scorers in this tournament, with Seifert having scored 274 runs and Allen leading with 289 runs, boasting an impressive strike rate of 303.03.

KKR now faces a strategic decision regarding their opening lineup, as both Allen and Seifert are capable of keeping wickets. It is likely that one of them will partner with Sunil Narine at the top of the order. However, including both in the starting lineup may prove challenging. Following the retirement of Andre Russell, KKR plans to utilize Rovman Powell as a middle-order power hitter. They are also looking to Australian all-rounder Cameron Green to fill the third-seamer role and contribute to the top half of the batting order.
