KL Rahul's Role Under Scrutiny
Following India's defeat in the ODI series against England, KL Rahul's batting order has become a hot topic. Known for his success at the number five position, Rahul was placed at number six for two matches against England and also batted at that position once against Afghanistan. Former chief selector Kris Srikkanth criticized the Indian team's management, suggesting they are mishandling the wicketkeeper-batsman. On his YouTube channel, he expressed concern over the treatment of Rahul, Sanju Samson, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, stating, "Why would anyone send KL Rahul to bat at No.6 while chasing a massive total? He has proven himself in challenging run-chases. Just like with Samson and Sooryavanshi, the management is making a mistake with Rahul. Is he really a No.6 or 7 batter? This is a serious injustice. His body language seemed nervous during the match," remarked the 1983 World Cup champion.
Srikkanth emphasized the need for someone to fulfill the role similar to Jos Buttler, especially after Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were dismissed early. He argued that had Rahul batted at No.4, he could have effectively supported Virat Kohli, as they have done in previous matches during the 2023 World Cup. Rahul is known for his ability to accelerate the game, yet he was sent in when the match was already lost. How could he possibly turn the game around needing 15 runs per over alongside Axar Patel?" he added. Coming in at number six, Rahul managed to score only 12 runs off eight balls, hitting two fours, and totaled just 13 runs in the series. He missed the second ODI due to illness.
India's Series Defeat
Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, India lost the three-match ODI series 1-2. The series began with a six-wicket victory for India in Birmingham, where they successfully chased a target of 259 in 45.2 overs. However, England, led by Harry Brook, bounced back in the second ODI, successfully chasing down 234 runs in 44.1 overs. In the final match at Lord's, India conceded a staggering 387 runs. Rohit Sharma's impressive 138 runs went in vain as India fell short in their chase of 388 runs. Notably, Rohit made history by becoming the first Indian to score a century at Lord's. Earlier, India had also faced a 0-4 defeat in the five-match T20I series.
