KL Rahul Reflects on Victory Over South Africa

Ranchi (Jharkhand) [India], November 30: After a hard-fought victory against South Africa, Indian captain KL Rahul expressed his enjoyment in watching cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli play with such freedom. He also commended pacer Harshit Rana for his impressive performance with the new ball, describing him as "special and full of potential."

The 'Ro-Ko' spectacle continued from Sydney, captivating the Ranchi audience as Virat notched his 52nd ODI century while Rohit set a new record for the most sixes in ODIs. Despite a challenging start with Harshit Rana's fiery bowling, South Africa managed to recover from a precarious position of 11/3, thanks to fifties from Matthew Breetzke, Marco Jansen, and Corbin Bosch. However, Kuldeep Yadav's four wickets left them just 17 runs shy of victory.

In the post-match interview, KL admitted to feeling "butterflies in the stomach" during the tense defense of a 350-run target. He stated, "I would be lying if I said I felt completely calm during South Africa's chase. Captaining the country again in ODI cricket comes with expectations. There was a sense of calm, but they kept pushing us, which was thrilling."

On the duo of Rohit and Virat, he remarked, "Watching them play with such freedom is always enjoyable. They have consistently played like this throughout their careers, and having them in the dressing room is a lot of fun for me."

Regarding Harshit, Rahul noted that the team had been searching for someone with his height and ability to contribute runs, emphasizing that he is still in the development phase. "Harshit has performed exceptionally well. I recognized his potential the moment he joined the team. He is still growing, but he has a lot of promise," he added.

KL also mentioned that his new role as a number six batter is beneficial for his "personal development," stating, "I keep thinking about the game and striving to improve."

In the match, South Africa chose to bowl first. Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed early for 18 runs off 16 balls, but Rohit (57 off 51 balls, including five fours and three sixes) and Virat formed a solid 136-run partnership for the second wicket. India faced a middle-order collapse, losing Rohit, Ruturaj Gaikwad (8), and Washington Sundar (13) quickly, leaving them at 200/4.

However, a partnership of 76 runs between KL (60 off 56 balls, with two fours and a six) and Virat, followed by a 65-run stand with Jadeja (32 off 20 balls, with two fours and a six), propelled India to a total of 349/8 in their 50 overs.

During South Africa's chase, they lost three quick wickets to Indian pacers, finding themselves in a dire situation at 11/3. A 66-run partnership between Tony de Zorzi (39 off 37 balls, with seven fours) and Matthew Breetzke provided some stability. Dewald Brevis contributed a quick 37 off 28 balls, but half the team was dismissed for 130 runs.

A significant 97-run partnership between Breetzke (72 off 80 balls, with eight fours and a six) and Marco Jansen (80 off 39 balls, with seven fours and three sixes) threatened to turn the game in South Africa's favor, but Kuldeep Yadav's timely wickets reduced them to 227/8. Corbin Bosch (67 off 51 balls, with five fours and four sixes) kept the fight alive, but South Africa ultimately fell short by 17 runs. Harshit Rana also had a commendable bowling performance with figures of 3/65.

With this victory, India leads the series 1-0, and Virat was awarded the 'Player of the Match' for his century.
