Morkel Highlights Rahul's Importance Ahead of Test Series
Galle, Sri Lanka - On August 13, India's bowling coach Morne Morkel expressed strong confidence in wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul's potential impact in the forthcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. Morkel emphasized Rahul's extensive experience and his capability to guide younger players in adapting to local conditions.
The first Test of the two-match series is set to commence on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium.
Rahul stands out as the only remaining member from India's batting lineup during the 2017 tour, making his experience particularly valuable for the team in Galle. During a pre-match press conference, Morkel commended Rahul's recent form and noted that his leadership and communication skills would be crucial for the younger players as they prepare for the Sri Lankan conditions.
Morkel remarked, "KL has been exceptional in leading the batting front over the past couple of years. His communication will be vital for the team during net preparations, helping them understand what to expect. Our players have gained significant insights into their individual games over the last few months, which is why we arrived here 10 days early to maximize their preparation time and refine their game plans for the Galle surface."
Considering Galle's conditions, Morkel mentioned that deploying three spinners could be a strategic option for India. He noted that while the pitch appears favorable initially, it may present more challenges as the Test progresses. The focus for India will be on mental adaptability, maintaining discipline with the ball, and batting for extended periods.
"Traditionally, we analyze the venue and its statistics to inform our strategy. Our spin bowling attack is aggressive, allowing us to create pressure with seam from one end while utilizing spin from the other," Morkel explained.
"The surface looks promising, but as the match unfolds, we anticipate changes. Our preparation has equipped us to handle various scenarios, and now it’s about overcoming the mental challenges posed by these conditions, batting effectively, and executing our bowling spells accurately," he added.
India kicked off their Sri Lanka tour on a positive note, securing a six-wicket victory against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI in a three-day warm-up match, with Devdutt Padikkal impressively scoring an unbeaten 142.
