Experienced player KL Rahul is likely to be appointed as India's vice-captain for the forthcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies, commencing on September 27.
Under the leadership of Shubman Gill, India will kick off their ODI journey against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram, with the subsequent matches scheduled for Guwahati on September 30 and Mullanpur on October 3.
Selection Meeting Insights
The squad for the West Indies series, along with the Irani Cup, is set to be announced on September 16, following the second T20I against Afghanistan, which will be attended by the chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar.
Notably, this selection meeting marks Agarkar's final task within his current contract, which concludes on October 4.
While he is eligible for a one-year extension, the BCCI has not disclosed any information regarding Agarkar's future.
Absence of Key Players
Due to the Asian Games overlapping with the ODI series against the West Indies, regular vice-captain Shreyas Iyer will be unavailable as he leads the T20 squad in Japan.
Additionally, Ishan Kishan's commitment to the Asian Games raises questions about the second wicketkeeper's position behind Rahul, with Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel as the main contenders.
A BCCI source familiar with the selection process indicated, 'The decision will depend heavily on the perspectives of the head coach and captain.'
Potential Outcomes for Pant and Jurel
Should Pant not be chosen as the second wicketkeeper, he is expected to captain the Rest of India team in the Irani Cup against Jammu and Kashmir in Srinagar.
Conversely, if Pant is selected for the national team, Jurel may take the lead for the Rest of India, having recently captained India A in Sri Lanka.
Challenges in Selecting All-Rounders
The national selectors face challenges in identifying a seam bowling all-rounder for the ODIs unless Hardik Pandya is confirmed fit.
Pandya, who has been selected for India A, is anticipated to be ready for competitive white-ball cricket by September 20, according to sources from the BCCI Centre of Excellence.
The selectors have included Hardik for the India A one-dayers scheduled to begin on October 6 in Puducherry, but the West Indies ODIs will conclude on October 3, raising questions about his selection for that series.
Injury Concerns Among Fringe Players
The selection committee is also grappling with injuries to several fringe players, which complicates the all-rounder selection process.
Currently, injured players include Harsh Dubey, Suryansh Shedge, Mohsin Khan, Venkatesh Iyer, Harshit Rana, and Shahbaz Ahmed, all of whom are unavailable for selection for the senior team, A team, or Irani Cup.
These players will be undergoing rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Prospective Picks for the Irani Cup
Mumbai's domestic star Sarfaraz Khan, who was not selected for the India A Tests against Australia A, is expected to be included in the Rest of India squad.
Additionally, Delhi's promising talents Sanat Sangwan and Ayush Doseja, who ranked among the top three run-scorers in the Ranji Trophy, are likely to join the Rest of India team alongside Ravichandran Smaran.
