KKR Releases Mustafizur Rahman Following BCCI Directive

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have officially let go of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their lineup for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, following directives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

This decision has sparked significant backlash, particularly on social media, where KKR's owner, Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, faced criticism from fringe groups labeling him a “traitor” for signing Rahman for a hefty fee of Rs 9.2 crore.

“In light of recent events, the BCCI has mandated that KKR release Mustafizur Rahman from their squad. The board has also indicated that they will permit a replacement if requested,” stated BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia on Saturday.

While the exact reasons for this action were not disclosed, it is believed that the decision stems from public outcry regarding reports of targeted violence against the Hindu minority in Bangladesh.

“The release was executed following proper procedures and consultations, as per BCCI's instructions. KKR will be allowed to seek a replacement player in accordance with IPL rules, with further details to be provided later,” KKR mentioned in their official statement.

This situation raises concerns about the future of cricketing ties between India and Bangladesh, especially with the Bangladesh Cricket Board expressing security worries for its players ahead of their scheduled visit to India for the 2026 World T20. They have entrusted the International Cricket Council, led by Jay Shah, to make decisions regarding the venues.

Additionally, the BCCI has postponed its planned white-ball series, which included three ODIs and three T20 matches against Bangladesh that were set for August.
