Guwahati, April 21: Kiran Powar, a former first-class cricketer known for his contributions to Assam's domestic cricket, has been named the head coach of the State's senior men's team. His appointment brings a wealth of domestic experience and proven coaching skills.
Powar, who is a left-handed batsman and off-spin bowler, has had a diverse playing career in India's domestic cricket landscape.
He played for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy from 1997 to 2000, later representing Goa, Assam, and Baroda in subsequent seasons.
Remarkably, he is one of the few players to have participated in multiple zones—West, South, and East—in prestigious tournaments like the Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy.
During his junior career, Powar captained both Mumbai and West Zone teams and led the India Under-19 squad on a tour of Australia in the 1994-95 season.
He previously played against an Australian Under-19 team that featured future stars such as Brett Lee, Andrew Symonds, and Michael Hussey.
In first-class cricket, Powar accumulated 2,562 runs across 39 matches, boasting an impressive average of 42, which includes eight centuries, showcasing his reliability as a middle-order batsman.
As he transitioned into coaching, Powar earned Level A and B certifications from both the England and Wales Cricket Board and the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy.
His coaching journey includes leading the Vidarbha state team and academy, where he successfully guided the team back to the elite group after a five-year hiatus.
Additionally, he has worked with Mumbai's age-group teams, served as a selector for the Mumbai Ranji and Under-23 squads, and was involved with Gujarat Titans as a talent scout during the IPL.
Most recently, he coached Mumbai’s Under-23 team and the West Zone squad in the Duleep Trophy.
His new role is anticipated to strengthen Assam's preparations for the upcoming domestic season, as the State team aims to improve its performance under a revamped coaching structure.
“With Kiran Powar's extensive playing and coaching background, the Assam Cricket Association is optimistic that his expertise will greatly enhance the development and performance of the Assam Senior Men’s Team,” stated the association.
