Khelo India University Games Set to Kick Off
The fifth edition of the Khelo India University Games is poised for a spectacular launch on Monday in Rajasthan. Organized by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in collaboration with the Government of Rajasthan and the Rajasthan State Sports Council (RSSC), the event will take place across seven cities: Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, Ajmer, Bharatpur, and Bikaner.
This year marks the inaugural hosting of the Khelo India University Games in Rajasthan, a premier event under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports that highlights the best university athletes in India. The games are also supported by the Association of Indian Universities and various National Sports Federations, with Poornima University serving as the host institution.
Nearly 5,000 athletes from over 230 universities will compete in 24 disciplines, which include 23 medal sports and one demonstration event. New sports introduced this year are canoeing, kayaking, cycling, and beach volleyball, showcasing the expanding scope of university sports in India.
Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, emphasized the significance of the Khelo India University Games, stating, “This event is a celebration of India’s rising sporting talent, bringing together young athletes who embody dedication and excellence. As we aim for success in the Asian Games 2026 and the Commonwealth Games, these games will be crucial in developing future champions.”
Mandaviya further noted, “The Khelo India initiative ensures that every promising athlete receives the necessary support to achieve greatness. We are dedicated to fostering their ambitions and are excited to witness the evolution of Indian sports.”
Several elite athletes will participate in the Khelo India University Games, including double Olympian swimmer Srihari Nataraj and renowned archers like Olympian Bhajan Kaur, Asian Games gold medalist Parneet Kaur, and world champion compound archer Aditi Gopichand Swami.
Nataraj, representing Jain University, will compete in six swimming events, marking his second appearance at the Khelo India University Games following the 2022 edition. He expressed, “KIUG is an excellent platform for emerging swimmers. Many competitors have experience at the Asian level, and I am eager to race against them. Events like KIUG and the Khelo India Youth Games are fantastic initiatives by the sports ministry, and athletes should leverage these opportunities.”
Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Rajasthan's Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and a silver medalist in rifle shooting at the 2004 Athens Olympics, remarked, “Every young individual possesses some talent. It is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to create opportunities for these youngsters to excel. KIUG provides a competitive environment for 5,000 athletes where skill is key. However, it’s important to remember that winning medals isn’t everything; sports also contribute to developing responsible citizens.”
In the previous edition of the Khelo India University Games, Chandigarh University emerged victorious with 66 medals, including 28 golds, while Lovely Professional University and Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar secured the second and third positions, respectively. Eight records were set in athletics.
Lovely Professional University, fielding the largest contingent of 267 athletes, aims to secure a top-three finish again. A university official stated, “We always prepare thoroughly for KIUG and are optimistic about maintaining our performance. The weather is favorable, and athletes will enjoy the conditions.”
Jain University, with its strong swimming team, is expected to earn significant medals from the pool. Nataraj commented, “Jain is actively promoting various sports, especially swimming, and we anticipate performing well.”
