Inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games Kick Off in Raipur

Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], April 1: During her visit to the first-ever Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) 2026, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Nikhil Khadse, emphasized the government's dedication to empowering tribal youth through sports.


The inaugural edition of the KITG is taking place from March 25 to April 3 across Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Sarguja, uniting tribal athletes nationwide and offering them a platform to display their skills.


On Day 8 of the Games, Khadse shared with reporters that this initiative is tailored to engage young individuals from tribal backgrounds and encourage broader participation in sports.


“The Khelo India Tribal Games aim to actively involve youth in sports, particularly focusing on increasing participation among tribal youngsters,” she stated.


The minister pointed out that this event serves not only as a competitive platform but also plays a vital role in discovering emerging talent from remote areas. She mentioned that athletes showing exceptional promise will receive structured training at government-run institutions.


“This initiative is designed for the comprehensive development of youth through sports. We are on the lookout for new talent and will ensure that deserving players receive proper support and promotion,” she added.


Khadse also referenced broader national initiatives, mentioning comments made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha about efforts to combat Naxalism, highlighting that improved security conditions create new opportunities for youth development.


She stressed that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, the government is collaborating across various ministries to direct the energy of young people towards positive pursuits like sports.


The first edition of KITG has attracted approximately 3,800 participants, including athletes, coaches, and officials, competing in 9 sports disciplines, which include 7 medal sports and 2 demonstration sports, with a total of 106 gold medals available. The event's mascot, 'Mor Veer', represents the courage, pride, and valor of over 700 tribal communities in India.
