Khawaja's Reaction to Aaqib Javed's Comments

Former Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja recently took a jab at Aaqib Javed, the director of high performance for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), following Javed's remarks about the PCB's significant changes to the Test team during the ongoing series. Javed had expressed his discontent with the team's performances, stating, "the world is laughing at us." In response, Khawaja commented on a social media post by Cricinfo, saying, "The world is laughing harder now."

Major Changes in Pakistan's Test Squad

In preparation for the third and final Test against England, set to begin on September 9, Pakistan has made substantial alterations to their Test lineup. This includes the release of head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul after the team faced heavy defeats in the first two Tests. Following a 194-run loss in the second Test, which gave England a 2-0 lead in the series, the PCB decided to overhaul nearly half of the squad. Seven players, including Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq, were dropped, while five uncapped players were introduced to the team.

Aaqib Javed's Critique of Team Performance

During an interview on Geo, Aaqib Javed criticized the team's lack of competitiveness, stating, "Two Test matches have come and gone, and the team has not competed in any way." He emphasized the need for strategic decisions, suggesting the inclusion of Ubaid Shah for added pace and calling for uncapped player Ghazi Gori to replace Rizwan as wicketkeeper. Javed expressed disappointment over the team's inability to perform, stating that the message sent to recalled players is that they must elevate their game.

Concerns Over Imam-ul-Haq's Injury

Aaqib also raised questions regarding Imam-ul-Haq's calf injury, which prevented him from batting in both innings of the second Test. Despite being seen practicing with a taped calf, Aaqib expressed skepticism about the legitimacy of the injury, stating, "The Imam injury is a big question mark, and a deep disappointment." He noted that players in the past have played through injuries, indicating that Imam should have made an effort to participate.

Misbah-ul-Haq Resigns Amid PCB Changes

In related news, former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has offered his resignation from the national selection committee following the PCB's decision to revamp the Test squad and coaching staff. Although the PCB has yet to accept his resignation, Misbah has also stepped down from his role as a batting consultant at the National Cricket Academy. Misbah, who has held various positions within the PCB, was part of the selection committee alongside Aaqib Javed and others.

Looking Ahead to the Third Test

As Pakistan prepares for the upcoming Test at Edgbaston, they aim to avoid a clean sweep in the series. The team currently sits at the bottom of the ICC World Test Championship standings, having lost 15 of their last 20 Tests. The squad for the Birmingham Test includes Babar Azam (captain), Abdullah Fazal, Arafat Minhas, and others, with hopes of concluding the series on a positive note.
